Botswana National Parks

Botswana is a very flat country with the Kalahari Desert making up nearly 70 percent of the country. Located in the southern part of Africa, Botswana is bordered by the countries of South Africa on the south and southeast, Namibia on the west and north, and Zimbabwe on the northeast. In addition to the Kalahari Desert, another important area of Botswana include the Okavango Delta, one of the world’s largest inland deltas, which is found in the northern part of Botswana. Botswana also has some small areas of forest, but only in the north along the Chobe River. Major tourist destinations in Botswana include Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Central Kalahari Game Reserve located in the Kalahari desert, and the Chobe National Park. Chobe National Park has one of the world’s largest concentration of African elephants. Botswana also has one of the few remaining large populations of the endangered African Wild Dog.

Botswana, even though most of the country is Kalahari Desert, has more than 2500 species of plants and 650 species of trees. Botswana has nearly 600 species of birds and about 500 species of Mammals. Some of the mammal species found in Botswana are the Lion (Panthera leo), Leopard (Panthera pardus), Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), Caracal (Caracal caracal), Wildcat (Felis silvestris), Serval (Leptailurus serval), African elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus), African Civet (Civettictis civetta), Cape Porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis), African Savanna Hare (Lepus microtis), Cape Hyrax (Procavia capensis), Ratel (Mellivora capensis), Brown Hyena (Hyaena brunnea), Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta), Side-striped Jackal (Canis adustus), African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus), Chacma Baboon (Papio ursinus), Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibious), Burchell’s Zebra (Equus burchellii), Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer), Common Duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia), Giant Eland Tragelaphus derbianus), Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus), Sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii), Roan (Hippotragus equinus), and Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus).
